EES students have a great experience at S-IMEW 2023

Well done Keaton!

Keaton Markham writes of his experience at S-IMEW 2023:

Last month, I had the opportunity to attend the Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW) in Sudbury, Ontario hosted by the PDAC. It was a whirlwind two weeks focused on various aspects of the mineral exploration industry. I shared this experience with 23 other students from universities across the country and could not have asked for a better group of people; I am sure some of the connections I made will last for a lifetime. The days were split between guest speakers, visiting exploration sites, and guided field trips of the local geology (Sudbury impact geology is amazing!). We also went on a three-day field trip to Kirkland, Temagami and Cobalt to see some of Ontario’s mining history as well as the unique geology such as the Temagami banded iron formation and fuchsite outcrops. One of the trips highlights was going underground at the Young-Davidson gold mine in Matachewan, Ontario. We rode in the back of a mine truck from the surface to a point 1.5 km underground and were able to visit a freshly blasted and washed drift. Being able to see the structural relationships of the ore in 3-D while standing in the drift was incredible. Another important takeaway from this workshop was being able to hear from the different guest speakers. Seeing the variety of backgrounds and paths they took to get where they are has really helped confirm that while I too am on my own unique path, it is the right one.
