Acadia Geology MSc student wins prestigious travel grant

Congratulations to Acadia Geology MSc student Amanda Smith, who has received a prestigious travel grant from the Mineralogical Association of Canada. The grant will contribute to costs related to Amanda’s travel in December, 2023, to the Senckenberg Naturhistorische Sammlungen Laboratory in Dresden, Germany, where she will analyze zircon grains for her thesis project rocks in the Cobequid Highlands of northern mainland Nova Scotia to obtain their crystallization ages.  In Dresden she will be working with Dr. Ulf Linnemann to learn the techniques of laser ablation zircon dating.  Her samples for analysis are being prepared in the Acadia Petrographic Lab where equipment to do the necessary polishing and imaging has been established recently by Acadia Professor Deanne van Rooyen.
