Mercury research all over NS!

My name is Sophia MacDonald, and I am a third-year BSc Environmental Science student enrolled in the CO-OP program. This summer, I had the privilege of working in the Mercury Lab as a research assistant, where I supported master’s student Ben Gooley with the collection, identification, and analysis of aquatic invertebrates from Ponhook Lake. It was a lot of fun learning how to navigate to sites along the lake by canoe, label and store specimens, and develop my microscopy and identification skills.

In addition to my field and lab work, I also had the opportunity to work on my own research project, in which I examined water data from Big Meadow Bog (BMB), located on Brier Island. It was very empowering to conduct an independent research project and contribute to the Mercury Lab’s research. I am very grateful for my time in the Mercury Lab and know that the skills and experience I gained this summer will serve me well throughout my academic journey and future career.
