Honourary Doctorate to alumna Dr. Catharine Farrow

At Convocation 2025 the department celebrated Dr. Catharine Farrow, who was awarded an Honourary Doctorate in Science.

Dr. Catharine Farrow is a distinguished alumna of Acadia University. She completed an MSc in Geology with Dr. Sandra Barr, during which she did groundbreaking research on igneous rocks of the Bras d'Or terrane in Cape Breton Island. Her discovery of magmatic epidote in many of the rocks contributed to a new understanding of the tectonic setting and origin of the plutons in the eastern Highlands. She has a PhD from Carleton University, and an Honourary Doctorate from Laurentian University. Her achievements in industry are nothing short of remarkable. Read about Dr. Farrow here.

On Friday Dr. Farrow visited EES with her family for a celebratory lunch with students and faculty. Dr. Raeside spoke about Catharine's MSc research, and the department presented her with a commemorative gift for the occasion - a polished slab of Ingonish River tonalite, one of the most important rocks in her MSc thesis area. Dr. Farrow has been part of the the development of the Acadia Petrographic Laboratory as a donor, and saw some of the equipment she helped to purchase for the lab on a tour of the department. Congratulations Dr. Farrow, and think you for your support of the department!
