Halifax 2022 national geoscience conference

Close to 800 geoscientists met at Halifax 2022, the joint meeting of the Geological and Mineralogical Associations of Canada, the International Association of Hydrogeologists (Canadian National Chapter), and the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists, in the Halifax Convention Centre. Hosted by the Atlantic Geoscience Society, the event also featured celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the AGS.

At the opening event a birthday cake was piped in and people were welcomed to the meeting by conference co-chairs Sandra Barr and Rob Raeside and AGS president Deanne van Rooyen.

A featured event was the release of the second edition of The Last Billion Years, the highly acclaimed geological history of the Maritime Provinces, edited by Rob Fensome and Graham Williams. At the conference, the book was available for sale with 240 copies snapped up by eager readers, many by students who were able to pick it up for no cost, thanks to a generous donation by Irving. Likewise the new edition of the NB/PEI geological map, Journey Through Time, was available to delegates.

The conference featured 4 symposia, 40 special sessions, 6 general sessions, 90 posters, 8 field trips, 6 short courses or workshops, a teachers' workshop and field trip, and over two years' backlog of award-winner recognition at various luncheons and lectures.
