Coastlines and Sable Island!
Bella writes: “I am an MSc student in Geology. My thesis focuses on how geological controls influence preferential erosion, specifically at Battery Provincial Park in Southeastern Cape Breton.
This summer, I pivoted from working on my thesis full-time, taking a position with Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources, where I contributed to the Coastal Monitoring Program. Through this work, I helped survey Nova Scotia’s coastal areas, gathering data to create elevation models and further understanding of coastal processes, including erosion.
One of our field sites was Sable Island National Park. For a week, we surveyed the 42 km stretch of the island. Exploring and understanding the geomorphology of this dynamic island was an incredible opportunity I had the privilege of experiencing.
