ENVS student wins prize in Mission Innovation SMART-CDR student competition!

“In August 2024 I joined a group of students from Dalhousie and the University of Hawaii to compete in the global Mission Innovation SMART-CDR student competition. We designed a novel “Sensor suite” for ocean water quality monitoring and measuring the parameters of the carbonate system. Our technology integrates existing sensors to measure pH, temperature, and salinity and also the development of an existing carbonate ion sensor. We are also creating an autonomous water sampling device, removing the need for hand samples. This idea allowed us to be selected as one of six finalists teams and punched our ticket to present our technology at the International CLIMIT Summit in Larvik, Norway in February. Here we were selected as one of three winning teams and got special recognition winning the Scale Enabler Award. We were also able to travel to the local UNESCO World Heritage site in search of the local mineral larvikite. As we continue into the future, we have incorporated and gotten a provisional patent for our technology, and are pursuing creating a prototype this summer. This was an extremely enriching experience as I was able to talk to so many industry and research professionals in the carbon dioxide removal space. I am looking forward to seeing where this will go!”
Congratulations Rowan and Team!!
