BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Peter Ricketts has returned to full-time teaching after a career in senior academic administration spanning almost 30 years, most as Acadia’s 16th President and Vice-Chancellor. Prior to his appointment as President at Acadia, Dr. Ricketts served as Provost and Vice-President Academic at Carleton University in Ottawa from 2009 to 2017. His experience as a senior university administrator include appointments as a Dean, Vice-President, Provost, and President in Nova Scotia, British Columbia, and Ontario.

Dr. Ricketts is internationally recognized for his expertise in coastal zones and ocean management. He has published extensively in these subject areas as well as delivering numerous conference presentations and serving on many panels and workshops. Dr. Ricketts is Past-President of the Coastal Zone Canada Association (CZCA) which he co-founded in 1993, and served as its President from 2002 to 2008, and again from 2012 to 2016. He currently serves as Vice-President Atlantic for the CZCA. In June 2016, Dr. Ricketts was awarded the H. B. Nicholls Award by the CZCA in recognition of his leadership and significant contribution to integrated coastal and ocean management in Canada.

Dr. Ricketts is a member of the Global Oceans Forum (GOF) which works internationally to develop ocean and coastal policy options within the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the UN Sustainability Goals. He has attended UN Conference of the Parties (COP) meeting since 2016 and both UN Ocean Conferences under SDG #14. Dr. Ricketts is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Coastal and Ocean Organization (ICO), which serves as the secretariat of the GOF.

Dr. Ricketts is also a passionate advocate for the internationalization of university education and has also published and presented papers in areas related to higher education and international education. Dr. Ricketts has served on the boards of numerous organisations and institutions, and recently completed terms as chair of the boards of EduNova, Atlantic University Sport, and the Maple League of Universities.

On October 5, 2022 Dr. Ricketts was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal by The Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, at Government House in Halifax, NS for service to education in the Province of Nova Scotia. Dr. Ricketts lives in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada, and is an avid soccer fan, still supporting his home team of AFC Bournemouth (known as the Cherries). Dr. Ricketts is married and has two grown-up children, and a miniature poodle called Brandi.
